Cypress is located about 30 miles northwest of Houston in Harris County and is unincorporated. The Atakapan, which is a Native American tribe, originally settled the area. General Houston and the Texas Army passed through the area before the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836. In the 1840’s, a number of Germans settled in present day Cypress. Until the 1980s, Cypress and the surrounding area was not densely populated. At that time, a number of developers came and began to map out and develop areas in and around Cypress. The result of this is that the population increased dramatically. The area is known to locals as Cypress-Fairbanks or Cy-Fair. Telge Park is located in Cypress and is a wonderful place for families and individuals to go. There are a number of picnic tables, swings, jungles gyms, slides and much more. The park has a lot of walking paths and people can enjoy the woods that some of the paths go through. For more information about this park, call 281-496-2177. The Fairfield Dog Park is a made specifically for dogs. Other parks in Cypress include Coles Crossing Park and Festival Park.
There are a variety of activities and attractions in Cypress and the surrounding area. There is a county library in Cypress, which is called the Northwest Branch Library. It is closed on Sundays and Fridays, open on Mondays from 1-8 pm, 10 am-6 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and from 12-8 pm on Wednesdays. Cypress has a number of great golf courses and they include Cypress Lakes, Blackhorse and Longwood Golf Club. The Berry Center is located in Cypress and hosts a number of events including school programs, sports tournaments and dance competitions. For more information, go to www.berrycenter.net. One of the biggest events in Cypress is the Wine Fair Cy-Fair. It is an annual event that provides people with the opportunity to experience amazing wine and fantastic food.
